It is not always easy to find out what to create videos about, and how to do it. So we figured we'd create an article series called "How we made this video" for those of you who would like some simple tips and tricks on how you can create specific videos.
In this article, we'll go through the process of how we created this interview video in a very simple way. ⬇️
Creating an interview video usually takes a little more time and effort than creating a video with only text and images, because there's a bit more planning involved. But no worries, with a bit of preparation in place, an interview video can be made in no time. After creating questions and filming your interview, you've got the clips you need to start putting it all together. Here's how we thought when we created our video:
1. Starting with a good quote
In this video, we really wanted the first thing that's being said to be something powerful – something that could make the viewer get interested enough to stay till the end of the video.
Try to find the quote in your interview that can tease interest or in a way sum up and set the expectations for the rest of the video. This clip should be a short, to-the-point, and snappy quote to intrigue the viewer.
2. Adding Name tag and subtitle
One of the first things we also wanted to do, was to add a name tag. Adding a name tag with name and job title is a good way to introduce people in interview videos, so people know who they are and get the context of why they are in this video.
Our purpose for this video was to share it on social media, where videos are more often than not viewed without sound. So for us, it is always important to add subtitles to videos that will go on social platforms to make them more "social media friendly". We of course also wanted the subtitles to be readable, so we added a colored box behind it.
3. Picking the clips that will add value
Deciding on the rest of the clips to use for the interview video is usually what takes most of the creation time. The total length of all the clips we filmed was pretty long, but we only wanted our video to be around 20-30 seconds, meaning that we had to trim it down – a lot! So we had a job to do sitting down and listening, making notes of the best parts of the interview, and trimming it down - to make it as short as it is today.
We only wanted to add the clips that would add value to the video and the context, and so we needed to be quite restrictive on which clips were given a slot in our video, and which didn't. (Way harsh). When we realized that we sat on a lot of very good material, we decided to create more videos with different topics using the clips that we cut for this video. That way, we didn't let any of that great material go to waste. ♻️
4. Breaking it up with text boxes
Sometimes it can be nice to split up the video in different sections to get a "break" if there is a lot of talking and also to give more context/reminders to what is being said. We've solved this by adding colored posters with text between clips. If you're creating a longer video, this feature can be particularly useful.
For this video, we thought it would be nice to break up the interview with small factual statements, trying to underline the points being made in the interview. Another way to do it is to add the question you asked as a text block followed by the person answering that question. In a longer interview, doing this can make it easier for the viewer to follow the course of the video.
